The final farewell to Pope Francis is bringing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from every continent to Rome, many Romans, and 170 delegations of royals, heads of state and government from around the world, leaders of supranational organizations, and representatives of other religions. All in Rome, for a day once again as the "caput mundi."
But what was Jorge Bergoglio's relationship with Italy? Pope Francis was born in Argentina, but he had Italian roots. It was the 1920s. Giovanni Angelo, Pope Francis' grandfather, left Piedmont, the northern region of Italy, where he first tried the path of agriculture and then that of commerce, without success. The difficult economic conditions, combined with the opportunities offered by relatives who had already emigrated, prompted the family to leave.
