Silvia Limoncini appointed new Director General for Italians abroad

Silvia Limoncini is the new Director General for Italians Abroad and Migration Policies at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A Minister Plenipotentiary, Limoncini succeeds Luigi Maria Vignali, who had led the Directorate since May 2017. Born on September 28, 1967, in Perugia, Limoncini earned a degree in political science in 1993 and entered the diplomatic service in December 1997.

She was first assigned to the Directorate General for Cultural Relations, and later to the Directorate General for Cultural Promotion and Cooperation. In 2000, she was appointed Second Commercial Secretary in Riyadh, where she was confirmed the following year as First Commercial Secretary.

In 2002, she became Chief of Staff at the Press and Information Service, and in 2005, she was posted to Washington, DC, as First Secretary. In 2007, she was confirmed there with the rank of Counselor.

Upon returning to Rome, from 2009 to 2010 she attended the professional development course for Counselors of Legation at the Diplomatic Institute, under the Directorate General for Human Resources and Organization, in accordance with Article 17, Paragraph 7 of Legislative Decree No. 85 of March 24, 2000.

In February 2010, she joined the Minister’s Cabinet, where she remained following a change in government.

In 2012, she was appointed Embassy Counselor in London. In 2017, she was posted to New York as Deputy Consul General, where she remained until 2021, when she returned to Rome.

Since then, she has led the Unit for the Promotion of Italy in International Organizations within the Directorate General for Public and Cultural Diplomacy and headed the Coordination Unit of the Secretary General’s Office at the Farnesina.
