The Castle in the old town of Copertino – in the province of Lecce, Apulia – is a collection of at least three different architectural styles, fleshed out in the square fortified tower built under the Angevin rule; the sumptuous portal built under Charles III, reflecting the taste of the Renaissance with influences from Catalan art; and the mighty fortress built in 1540 by Evangelista Menga, a Copertino native, for Alfonso Castriota.

The large structure is one of the most impressing of its kind in Apulia, and is home to 15th-century frescoes (inside the Maddalena Chapel) and to a gem of Mannerist art: Gianserio Strafella's Chapel of San Marco.
