UNESCO has announced in Paris, during the Man and the biosphere Committee meeting, that three Italian sites have been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, those "places where to learn about sustainable development aiming to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with the sustainable use of natural resources".
The three Italian sites are the Po Delta reserve, the Ledro Alps and Judicaria reserve and the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano reserve: the Po Delta site spreads around an area of 139,398 hectares and over 16 municipalities. It also includes the river's branches, the coastal dune systems and the sand formations, lagoons, fishing ponds, marshes, fossil dunes, canals and coastal pine forests and cultivated lands dominated by rice farming, providing great variety of biodiversity and habitats.
