‘Vermiglio’ director Maura Delpero on the universe hidden in the Italian Alps

Director Maura Delpero took matters into her own hands when it came to making her film “Vermiglio” feel real. That started with scouting locations herself, and meeting the locals there.  “I myself went to the places, the secret places, where I thought I could find the real people and to convince ... I went to bars and convinced them to go to casting,” Delpero said.

“Vermiglio” follows the stories of a family in that titular alpine village — their secrets, betrayals and conflicting hopes for lives beyond their snowed-in existence. “Vermiglio” is a place almost completely secluded from world beneath it, a world which, during the film, is being consumed by the second World War. The family in the film is a big one with ten children, and one on the way, and bringing it to life required an array of child actors to take on big parts. That necessity created a dilemma for Delpero.
