The world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship is Italian: it will be named Libra and is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, in the Marche region. It is expected to be ready by 2026. The project aims to develop the first Net Zero ship—completely emission-free—by 2035.
As of now, traditional propulsion systems, even when powered by liquefied natural gas, can reduce emissions by up to 50%. The challenge is immense, as we're talking about a vessel with a gross tonnage of 54,300 tons, a length of 239 meters, and a capacity to accommodate up to 998 passengers across 499 cabins.
