From outer space to the darkest ocean depths: Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano has been appointed commander of NASA's NEEMO 20 undersea mission. This is a two-week expedition to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, which is to simulate cohabitation and working conditions of astronauts in an extreme environment in view of future space missions – including the exploration of other planets.
The mission will test time delays in communications due to the distance of potential spaceflight destinations, as well as assessing new-generation equipment and tools fine-tuned by the European Space Agency (ESA).
