Saturday, Dec. 7, would have been the 103rd birthday of the late great Louis Prima, the Italian-American trumpeter, singer and entertainer from New Orleans who went on to rule Las Vegas nightlife during its bada-bing heyday from the mid-1950s through the early 1960s. Prima is gone, but his music lives on, in part because of the efforts of his fifth wife and final singing partner, Gia Maione.
In the early 2000s, Maione – who passed away in September 2013 -- oversaw the re-release of Prima's latter-day catalog, the albums he recorded for his Prima MagnaGroove label. Those included "Angelina," the locally beloved collection of Italian novelty songs, as well as "The New Sounds of the Louis Prima Show."
