The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) condemns the bigoted attack against Congressman David Cicilline’s heritage. Congressman Cicilline is a valued member of the bipartisan Italian American Congressional Delegation. Similar to other immigrant groups and minorities, Italian Americans have long been the target of attacks on their heritage and negative stereotyping.
The fact is that Italian Americans over decades have contributed to American civil society at every level. Our achievements are also connected to strong values of family, faith and country. These kinds of ethnic slurs have no place in our democracy and civil society and aim to diminish the sacrifices and life changing contributions Italian Americans have given to the United States.
NIAF is committed to furthering mutual respect for all people, whatever their race or heritage. This is an essential component of a strong civil society.
