Recently, HBOWatch shared a great article about The Sopranos and its portrayal of the Italian-American identity. When The Sopranos first aired, I remember cousin Florence calling my mother and telling her, “it’s like they have been following us around!” Obviously she meant the culture, family dynamic, and Sunday dinners; not the killing, because, you know, the majority of us are not “connected.”
To someone outside the community, they might have just considered it another mob show. However, to those of us who are part of this often-complicated identity, we saw, as HBOWatch shared, “The Sopranos masterfully explores the nuanced reality of Italian-American identity through its rich character development and storytelling… While the show is often celebrated for breaking mob movie convention, its treatment of ethnic identity offers some of its most thought-provoking commentary.”
