Rocky is one of the greatest fictional characters of all time. Writing and performing in the film made Sylvester Stallone a star and a spawned a fistful of sequels, not only that, but the optimism of Rocky encapsulated the salve American society yearned for post-Vietnam and Watergate, and its fiscal and creative success (10 Oscar nominations, a win for Best Feature) paved the way for other boxing films - one of which, Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull - is one of the most delicious films committed to celluloid.
Rocky, and its underdog story, where success can be earned through hard work and dogged determination rather than solely by birthright, struck a chord with audiences, who after watching the movie felt they could achieve anything. Or, at the very least, beat the cr*p out of anyone.
