La Scala comes to California!

Jul 09, 2013 952

Experience the inimitable sights and sounds of La Scala here in California, thanks to the project MusicEmotion: Filarmonica della Scala and the Saturday Symphony Series.

Performances from the legendary Scala theatre in Milan will be screened in high definition and with surround sound at the Arena Theatre beginning on Saturday, the 20th of July, at 2pm. This matinee performance includes Mozart's Maurerische Trauermusik; Richard Wagner's Tristan and Isolde: Vorspiel und Liebestod; and Richard Strauss' Ein Heldenleben, all conducted by Daniel Harding.

The Saturday Symphony Series will offer two more Scala performances in August and September, with conductors Riccardo Chailly and Bobby McFerrin.

Cinema audiences will have a chance to see what it is like to attend a concert at La Scala. The camera weaves through the Filarmonica della Scala, bringing the nuances of the performers to life, and the event is given context with backstage interviews, quick introductions of the composers' lives, and anecdotes on the creation of the works.

Acclaimed conductor Daniel Barenboim comments: "Classical music concerts are much more enjoyable at the cinema than on TV, where everything is too small and the musicians are almost anonymous. In the cinema, thanks to the size of the screen, you can enjoy the orchestra both in its entirety and in its details much more".

Tickets are $15.
