Michael Teolis Singers, founded and directed by Italian American composer Michael Teolis, will present "A Musical Fusion: Africa and the West," on May 2 at 7:30 p.m. The program will feature original compositions by black composers of the western hemisphere, including two female Chicagoans, Lena McLin, and the late Margaret Bonds.
Spirituals, gospel arrangements, a Magnificat set to a Jamaican Patois text, a Ragtime opera by Scott Joplin, and a Psalm composed by contemporary pop artist Bobby McFerrin, are just a few of the diverse works on the program. Organ, percussion and drums will accompany the ensemble.
