"Alto" delivered with humor, panache and great heart at its North Carolina Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (NCGLFF) debut at the Carolina Theatre. It's easy to see why the film by writer and director Mikki del Monico, has, so far, garnered five film festival awards, including the NCGLFF Jury Award for Best Women's Feature.
At first, there's a tendency to feel overwhelmed by the large cast and trying to figure out who's who. There are 42 speaking parts that include the two major families: the Bellafuscos and the Del Vecchios. The film's director hails from a large, Italian family and has said that the film "is first and foremost a love letter to family."
