Acclaimed novelist and playwright Colin Sargent from Maine will present a reading of the book and follow with a discussion/Q&A.
The Boston Castrato captures 1920s Boston through the eye of a young Italian castrato seeking love. Raffi leaves more than his country behind in Rome after being snipped by a bishop as the last castrato and is soon bundled off to America when the Church takes shame. Forbidden to use his voice, other skills steal him into the society of 1920s Boston. Raffi enters the hardest quest of all – the search for a genuine love song. The novel, much as Ragtime did for New York, snatches Boston out of history and mixes it with a lively, vivid story.
