Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church celebrated the Italian ‘Saint Padre Pio’ by unveiling a new statue on Sunday. After mass, there was a procession with an Italian marching band through the streets of the South End, followed by a reception at the Italian Club on Winthrop Street. We spoke with Salvatore Circosta, president of the Springfield Sons and Daughters of Italy, who told us more about the event.
“We had a beautiful mass for him, we had the statue blessed at our church, and then we had a nice procession. Now, in the tradition of our home country in Italy, we have a big feast afterwards to celebrate our heritage and our saint,” he explained. Circosta added that this is the fourth event of this type this year, and that he has even bigger plans for next year.
