When it comes to outdoor dining in Boston, Mayor Michelle Wu seems to be taking an a la carte approach to fairness. Most restaurants can put out tables and chairs and have at it. But for North End eateries, they’ll have to pay for the privilege. Wu’s office said in a statement Wednesday that restaurateurs in the neighborhood have until April 10 to pay a $7,500 fee and apply to participate in this year’s outdoor dining program.
Miss the application deadline, and they can’t participate in the program, the city said. But the tab gets higher — according to reports, restaurants will be charged $458 a month for each parking spot used in their outdoor dining areas. The city says the money will go into a fund to pay for cleaning and other services to the neighborhood.
