On Monday, four men who have demonstrated ongoing support and recognition of the cultural and heritage significance that Columbus Day symbolizes will be inducted into the Pueblo Columbus Day Hall of Fame. Only one, however, has an Italian surname: an accurate reflection of what the New Columbus Day Celebration is all about.
Three years ago, in an attempt to make the local celebration inclusive of all immigrants who pursued the American dream in the wake of Columbus' historic voyage, the Sons of Italy Lodge 2738 rechristened it the New Columbus Day Celebration. "It's a day to celebrate the community and its people," said John Panepinto, a lodge member and celebration organizer. "Native Americans may argue, but it was Columbus who opened up the world to everyone."
