Joe Rabito, the former executive deputy commissioner for the state Office of General Services, explained in a deposition conducted last month that he was the one who in 2013 rejected the application submitted by the controversially named food truck the Wandering Dago to sell its wares on the Empire State Plaza.
Under questioning from plaintiffs' attorney George Carpinello, Rabito said he made the decision within five minutes, including his internet search for the etymology of "dago." While generally taken as a slur on Italian-Americans, the Wandering Dago's owners insist they mean it as a tribute to their hard-working ancestors, laborers paid "as the day goes."
