Many will celebrate Columbus Day Monday with a day off from work. But Joseph Consorte Sr. started his celebration a few days earlier. Consorte, 79, was honored with the city's annual "Italian Person of the Year" award Friday afternoon at City Hall.
"I am truly thankful for this. I am grateful to be a part of the group that has received this award," Consorte said. Fourteen residents have received the award since 1999. Mayor John M. Picard praised Consorte for his selfless efforts to the city over the years and the Italian-American community.
