Local Flavor 2023: After more than 100 years, Schenectady’s Civitello’s still making visitors feel right at home

The sign above the green and white awning at 42 North Jay St. says Civitello’s Spumoni & Italian Pastry, but to Roie and Angela Angerami, it’s home. For nearly 102 years their family has kept shop in the boxy brick building in Schenectady’s Little Italy neighborhood, selling made-from-scratch confections that have kept customers coming back for generations.

The building’s second floor has housed aunts, uncles and cousins. Its front room has held Sunday dinners and holiday celebrations. Its stoop has been host to folding chairs as generations of Civitellos sat and watched the world go by on warm summer nights.
