The Niagara Falls City Council honored four local Italian restaurants on Pine Avenue with nearly three centuries of combined history on Tuesday night. The Como Restaurant, established in 1927 and the oldest among them, celebrated its 90th anniversary last year. The mainstay city eatery has its roots in founder Francesco Antonacci’s bakery, which opened in 1914, and later became Trusello’s Pizza under a different ownership.
The restaurant known today – which bears the name of Antonacci’s favorite lake in Italy – was later born in a storefront on 18th Street and Pine Avenue before moving to its current location on the strip that was one of the city’s prime business corridors for decades. Since the Como’s establishment, a trio of other longtime restaurants have opened their doors and flourished in the Pine Avenue area as well.
