It was 11:10 am when Pope Francis opened the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica. A moment before he embraced his predecessor Benedetto XVI. At that precise moment, a ray of sunlight broke through a blanket of black clouds, an image captured by television cameras and that was perhaps the most symbolic possible way to start of the Jubilee.
"We must put mercy before judgement," said Bergoglio in his homily before 50,000 faithful, cold and tightly-packed in the piazza at dawn. It was the start of the Holy Year, which opened officially on November 29, in Bangui, the troubled capital of the Central African Republic. This Jubilee, which runs through November of 2016, is the first in history to expand its horizons from Saint Peter's to include the Holy Doors of cathedrals and major sanctuaries around the world.
