It may seem unbelievable to think, but pizza was not always Italy’s most iconic dish, in fact, in its earliest iterations, it was born in the streets, reserved for only the humblest of people. Pizza is arguably the world’s favorite fast food and today, it can be eaten anywhere, anytime.

At home, on the street corner, or at a restaurant. Throughout history and literature, pizza has fed some of the most storied moments of our time. Early versions of pizza appear in Virgil’s Aeneid, the Ancient Roman poet and Alexander Dumas wrote of pizza culture in his Le Carricolo. Thin savory cakes made of wheat were used as plates for their meals, Virgil and his men adorned their ‘leavened’ plates with what they foraged from the woods, prompting one of the characters to say, “look! we’ve eaten our plates!”
