The quiet Sicilian town of Valguarnera has become the unlikely setting for a powerful American film project that shines a light on a piece of history too often overlooked. The movie, titled Sulfur Road, tells the story of young boys—known as carusi—who were forced to work in Sicily’s sulfur mines in the early 1900s. The film explores their struggle, the strength of the human spirit, and the legacy of migration.

At the helm is director and writer Michael Cavalieri, a Sicilian American deeply connected to the island through his heritage. For him, this film is more than a production—it’s personal. Inspired by the journey of his grandfather who left Sicily in search of a better life, Cavalieri aims to give voice to those whose stories were buried in time and silence. The narrative goes beyond hardship, painting a picture of resilience, sacrifice, and hope.

This isn’t Cavalieri’s first project in Sicily. His earlier films explored themes of return and identity, and Sulfur Road continues that exploration with a broader scope and deeper historical context. The production has brought a sense of energy and purpose to Valguarnera, involving many locals both in front of and behind the camera.

The community has welcomed the opportunity with open arms. Local residents are playing extras, contributing to the set, and offering a sense of authenticity that can’t be replicated on a soundstage. Many see this film as a chance to reconnect with their roots and to share their ancestors’ stories with the world.

Several members of the Sicilian diaspora have even returned to participate. One Sicilian American, whose family emigrated to Texas decades ago, flew in to support the film and be part of something meaningful. For him and others, the story of Sulfur Road feels like their own—filled with both pain and pride.

Through this film, Cavalieri hopes to inspire younger generations to learn where they come from, to reflect on the sacrifices made by those before them, and to carry forward a sense of cultural identity. By filming on location in the very towns where these stories began, Sulfur Road bridges the past and present—giving voice to a chapter of Sicilian history that still resonates today.
