In the kitchen Mario Sanfilippo, the talented owner/chef of Porticello Ristorante in south Easton, came to the United States with his family from Italy when he was 10, settling in Dorchester. His mother, he says, is a fabulous cook, a fact that did not go unnoticed in the neighborhood.
"All the kids would come over to my house after basketball," he recalls, "and they always wanted to stick around for dinner." It wasn't long before he was working in Italian restaurants: washing dishes by the time he was 12, making pizzas at 14, cooking at 15.
