Faicco's has everything from tinned sardines to lemon drop cookies, and a lot, a lot of meat. Sausages are curled snake-like in one long display case, and braciole await your Sunday saucepot. There's a refrigerator filled with rounds of ham, roast beef, soppressata, salami, and the like.
My Italian Special sandwich ($10) began as a long loaf of bread, but the man at the counter quickly sliced it in half and began to pull out much of its crumb. "No!" I wanted to shout, "I give you my dough, you give me yours." As he then continued to shave layers of spicy ham capicola, sweet or hot soppressata (go for the hot), and proscuitto into the hollowed-out crust, followed by mozzarella, roasted peppers, lettuce, and tomato, I realized that the bread sacrifice was, in fact, very necessary.
