A round-trip flight to New York costs $400. A room at even a reasonably priced hotel will run you $600 for two nights. And you can't have dinner at a famous restaurant, even if it's Italian food, for under $100. Or you could stay home and make your own New York Italian-style dinner for a few bucks.
New York Italian restaurants have a cachet of their own; they carry with them a homey sense of slow-simmered tomato sauces, a warm hint of garlic in the air and maybe, just maybe, a gangster quietly eating pasta in the corner.
