Asphalt art transforms a street in Rome thanks to Bloomberg

A burst of colors has covered the asphalt of Via Monte Ruggero, in the heart of Tufello. This street in the Municipality III district is now part of Bloomberg Philanthropies' "Asphalt Art Initiative," a project founded by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The goal is to transform streets around the world by filling them with color to make them more vibrant, welcoming, and safer through asphalt art. The Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Department of the Municipality applied for the program and received a $25,000 grant.

The neighborhood chose Via Monte Ruggero because it is located in one of the areas most frequented by local children. Many schools, sports centers, and cultural facilities are nearby. The street had been quite hazardous for pedestrians due to the constant flow of cars, scooters, and bicycles. The design that has transformed the area was selected by the residents, who had the chance to choose from several sketches proposed by street artist Gio Pistone. The chosen theme is both practical and imaginative: a flying carpet where local children can play and walk safely.
