The largest energy storage system in Italy using hybrid “second-life” batteries was unveiled at Leonardo da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino. Developed by Enel and Aeroporti di Roma, the project not only contributes to decarbonizing the airport, but also gives a second life to used electric vehicle batteries. It is the only system of its kind that integrates heterogeneous batteries from three different automakers.

The system is fully integrated with the “Solar Farm,” the largest self-consumption photovoltaic installation at any European airport, designed by Aeroporti di Roma and built by Enel in collaboration with Circet. It was inaugurated in January 2025. Thanks to this storage system, the green energy generated can be stored and used when needed.
