The double success by Eni in Egypt and Enel in Brazil, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power, is good news for the Italian economy and demonstrates, once again, the capability of Italian companies to conquer strategic markets outside of national borders. But it is also an important indicator of the effectiveness of strategies put into practice by top managers who assumed the leadership of these state controlled companies just over one year ago.
In a very complex energy scenario, in which the price of oil continues to decline, requiring drastic restructuring plans by the important players with heavy cuts and deep revisions of their business, the hit scored by Eni off Egypt, where the largest giant natural gas field in the Mediterranean was discovered confirms that the direction taken by CEO Claudio Descalzi, who is determined to refocus the group on its core upstream business, is the right one.
