After years of speculation, Italian American basketball player Ryan Arcidiacono is finally heading to Italy—he has officially signed with Trapani Shark, in Sicily. Born in Philadelphia with clear Italian roots, the 31-year-old was often mentioned as a potential naturalized player for the Italian national team but never wore the official blue jersey.

Arcidiacono won the NCAA championship and was named MVP with Villanova in 2016 before launching his NBA career. Over seven seasons, he played 257 games with the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, and Portland Trail Blazers, while also spending significant time in the G League. Most recently, he played for the Windy City Bulls, averaging 8.3 points over 24 games last season.

Although he never made it onto Italy’s main national team, Arcidiacono did play 17 games with the experimental Italian squad, scoring 100 points. He also attempted to obtain Italian citizenship, but the process stalled.

This move to Trapani marks his first professional stint outside the United States.
