Preserving Italy's underwater treasures: a groundbreaking effort for biodiversity

Italy is known for its many stunning landscapes, making it one of the most beautiful countries in the world. From seas and hills to lakes, rivers, and mountains, each Italian region has extraordinary places to visit. But some of these hidden gems are off the beaten path and don't attract tourists. Did you know, for example, that Italy is home to more than eighty submerged mountains that rise up to 2,000 meters?
 
To begin mapping these underwater mountains and studying the health of complex ecosystems that are crucial for biodiversity, a ship set sail from Trapani in Sicily toward the Cimotoe submarine volcanic complex, off the coast of Pantelleria. The ship will analyze an area of over 13,000 square kilometers, regions that have never been monitored before, some of which are almost completely unknown.
