The Tiber River becomes a Unesco heritage site in the stretch through the historic center of Rome

The Tiber will become a Unesco World Heritage Site in the stretch of river that runs through the historic center of Rome. The candidacy of the Tiber as a Unesco World Heritage Site had been launched four years ago, in 2020.

And, having cashed in a first important result, the goal now is to make the entire Tiber a Unesco heritage property with the attempt to extend the UNESCO candidacy to Ostia Antica and the entire Tiber Valley, including areas in Umbria and Romagna, because multi-regional Unesco projects have a better chance of success.

The candidacy has relaunched the Tiber as a common good to be safeguarded and enhanced. A goal that sees the city of Rome and the Lazio region committed through the creation of the five jubilee overlook parks of the Foro Italico, Lungotevere delle Navi, Ponte Milvio, Acqua Acetosa at the confluence of the Tiber and Aniene and Ostia Antica to which will be added the transformation of Tiberis into a permanent park. A valuable river ecosystem that will be returned to full usability and integrated with the city's green heritage.
